A cozy reading corner

Let’s be honest here: when you combine motherhood with a fulltime job, it’s hard to find the time to sit down and comfortably flick through a magazine or book. But it’s even harder if you don’t have a designated spot to do so; which is why I decided to create a corner that’s especially reserved to read…

As I tent to care more about things I make myself, I came up with the idea to create a reading lamp instead of buying one. #ikeahacks are already quite famous, but I’d like to introduce a new hashtag: #slvhacks; as the products of lighting brand SLV are quite versatile, too! The Fitu light inspired me to create a reading lamp with more than one function: instead of just illuminating your home, I created a lamp that acts as a bookmark and can hold your cup of coffee, too! When your living space is limited – which will only be more apparent as the world population grows – it’s pieces like these that turn out to have the biggest impact on our daily lives…

What do you need?
Spice holder
Drill
SLV Fitu fitting
SLV bulb
Metal grid
Plug
Switch
Magazine

Step by step

Buy the IKEA spice holder and mount it.

Make a hole in the base using a drill with a wooden bit. The diameter should be about a centimeter wider than that of the electric cord.

Cut a geometric shape of choice in the metal grid.

Fold the grid 90 degrees and make a hole at the same place where there’s a whole in the wooden spice holder.

Pass the wire through the hole and mount the plug at the end of the wire.

Screw the bulb in.

Attach the shelf to the wall in the opposite direction initially provided.

Sit down, relax and enjoy flicking through your magazine or book!
